  Attorney Resources

Many very good criminal defense attorneys find themselves very challenged when it comes to defending a drunk driving case. I have assembled the following resources to assist attorneys. I have tried over 60 drunk driving cases to juries. If you are a criminal defense lawyer hopefully you will find these resources helpful. If you have additional questions I can be reached at 248-624-5500.

THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA)

THE TRAINING MANUAL

NHTSA developed a manual that trains thousands of officers nationwide. Although some agencies do use local training guides or no guides at all, this is the most authoritative manual out there. It is not easy to find, since it is not necessarilly meant for public consumption.

Chapters that could be useful to review before going to trial:

  • V. Phase One: Vehicle in Motion
  • VI. Phase Two: Personal Contact
  • VIII. Concepts and Principles of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests

Note: Some agencies do not use the NHTSA manual in training their officers. The NHTSA manual has the only standardized procedures for the Field Sobriety Exercises. One example of a local training manual is:

Police Alcohol and Other Drugs Training Seminar
