 SAMPLE SUPPORT LETTER

Dear Hearing Officer:

My name is _______ and I work with _____________. I have been working with __________ at ____________ for over one year. I am aware that _______ has had a history of alcohol problems and I know that he has not drunk alcohol since ______________. I am also aware that _______ has had two OWI offenses, the first one in __________, and most recently in _______________.

Until _______’s second arrest, I was not aware of any issues with his drinking. However he did share his issues with me in the aftermath of his second arrest. He has embraced AA and is working on learning as much as possible from his peers in the program and on changing his attitude and outlook on life. We have lunch together a couple of times a week and we have talked about the consequences of his actions and his approach toward his recovery program. _______ has talked with me about how he is working on accountability and his daily life and how sobriety is having a positive impact on his goals, for example, applying for graduate school or growing his accounts at work.

_______ shows up to work on time and does not show any signs of having a hangover or that he has been drinking. I see ________every day of the week and we collaborate on projects and ideas related to our business. ______ is very straight forward in his approach to his work, strives to develop those who report to him, and assists others for the betterment of the whole group. I fully believe that the positive attitude ______ brings to work is directly related to being sober and is exhibited everyday in how he conducts himself.

To Whom It May Concern:

As an active member of AA for over 5 years, I am privileged to write this letter in support of ___’s progress and perseverance in the 12th step program of AA. On August 28, 2009, __________ celebrated one year of continuous sobriety!

I have known ___________ since he started attending AA meetings in September 2008. I see ___________ at 3-5 meetings a week; sit at discussion tables with him often; and have driven him to many meetings. I speak with him before and after meetings, on the phone, and have been out with him for dinner and/or coffee on several occasions. I have watched him grow in his understanding and acceptance of his disease of alcohol dependency. _____ now has a keen understanding of the consequences of his actions and behaviors, especially when he was under the influence of alcohol. He strives to do the “right: thing on a daily basis, which is one of the main tenants of the AA program. He is very honest, open-minded, and willing when it comes to working the 12 steps of the AA program. This honestly, open-mindedness, and willingness has given him the hope and strength to move forward with the rest of his life in a more positive manner.

_______’s continued progress is indicative of his acceptance of his “part” in situations and circumstances that arise in his life. He continues to make better choices and decision as well as help other people in the AA program, including myself. Our “Big Book” tells us: “practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics” (pg. 89).

I believe that __________ should be strongly considered for reinstatement of his driver’s license Should you require any additional information, please feel free to contact me.
